Living with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) can significantly impact your ability to work, maintain daily routines, and sustain your quality of life. For some members of our community, the chronic pain, urinary urgency and frequency, and associated conditions make it difficult or impossible to maintain full-time employment. If you find yourself in this situation, you are not alone, and there may be options available to help.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSD/SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) are federal programs designed to provide financial support to individuals who are unable to work due to a medical condition. While IC/BPS is not listed as a specific condition in the Social Security Administration’s Blue Book, many individuals with IC/BPS have successfully obtained disability benefits based on the severity of their symptoms, functional limitations, and supporting medical documentation.

The disability application process can be complex and, at times, overwhelming, especially when you’re already managing a chronic illness. Understanding your rights, knowing what documentation may strengthen your case, and connecting with the right support can make a meaningful difference in your experience.

To help our community better understand disability benefits and the application process, we’ve partnered with Liner Legal Disability Lawyers to provide free educational resources. These materials cover topics including an introduction to SSD and SSI benefits, guidance for caregivers supporting a loved one through the process, and information for the healthcare professionals involved in your care.

You can also take a brief, confidential qualification survey to help determine whether you may be eligible for disability benefits.
