ICA Advocacy Success Story
Read below for an example of how IC advocacy directly impacts IC patients.
As many patients know, it takes an average of 7 years to diagnose patients with IC/BPS. Currently, there is no diagnostic test. Rather, IC/BPS is diagnosed by exclusion and it can be a long and painful road before IC/BPS patients receive their IC/BPS diagnosis.
What may be less known is the fact that the Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA) is the ONLY nonprofit charitable organization that exists to support the IC/BPS community and is currently the SOLE presence on Capitol Hill advocating for funding for IC/BPS research and awareness.
ICA’s advocacy efforts and continued presence for over 20 years on Capitol Hill has led to important IC/BPS awareness, research, and education. Most recently, a research study that aims to develop a urine-based diagnostic test for IC/BPS, similar to a pregnancy test. This research study is groundbreaking for IC/BPS patients and is happening because of the continued dedication to our advocacy work.
Having a simple diagnostic test will save patients a lot of time, pain, and discomfort that comes from being subjected to other tests to arrive at a “diagnosis of exclusion.” It will allow patients to start their journey of managing IC/BPS. And once a reliable diagnostic test is available, pharmaceutical companies will be more inclined to invest in and develop drugs, which will open life-changing possibilities for our patients.
We need you to act. Maintaining an Advocacy presence on Capitol Hill is not free, and it does not stop once the meetings with our policy makers have ended. YOU can help us continue this critical work by donating today with a one-time gift or a monthly recurring donation.
The mission of ICA’s Advocacy is to educate Members of Congress on IC/BPS patients’ issues and ensure they support our legislative needs. And we can’t do it without you!
