INTRODUCTION:
This article provides a comprehensive overview of currently available treatments, ongoing clinical trials, and investigational agents that have the potential to become new treatments for interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS). The efficacy and shortcomings of each current IC/BPS treatment is detailed. According to the expert authors, current treatments often fail to control the symptoms of IC/BPS. Moreover, since long-lasting and effective treatments for IC/BPS are still not established, the treatment is sometimes selected simply based on the practitioner’s experience and preference, rather than any patient-specific factors. Thus, several new treatment approaches hold promise, including retaining techniques, sustained drug release, and drugs that act on neural pathways.
