Sound Bites on Overlapping Conditions

Research demonstrates that people with IC may also be affected by other health issues. During the past week, news about some of these conditions made the headlines.

  • Allergies: A Google Alert featured a blog by an Indonesian pediatrician about children and food allergies. Dr. Widodo Judarwanto highlighted a 2005 case study from Japan reporting a link between interstitial cystitis and food allergy. Thanks to Dr. Judarwanto for helping to raise awareness about this connection. The Spring 2009 issue of the ICA Update also provided a great overview of the latest research on this topic.

  • Endometriosis: Specific types of dietary fat, specifically trans fats, were found to be associated with a higher incidence of endometriosis in a study conducted by the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Look for a summary of this and other selected scientific studies in next week’s ICA e-Newswire.

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A report released last week by the Institute on Medicine concluded that military service during the Persian Gulf War is linked to gastrointestinal disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome. The report also noted some evidence of links to fibromyalgia and chronic widespread pain among this group of veterans.

  • Vulvodynia: The National Vulvodynia Association (NVA) invites proposals from clinical researchers to develop an infrastructure for, and maintain, a multi-center Vulvodynia Clinical Trial Network (VCTN). The goal in creating this network is to facilitate the efficient collection of scientific data on treatment efficacy in vulvodynia patients.
