Interstitial Cystitis Funding Opportunities

Without research, there is no hope for finding answers to what causes or may cure interstitial cystitis (IC). This is why the Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA) not only funds IC research, but also informs researchers of new funding opportunities. Many of the application deadlines are fast approaching – be sure to check out the current funding opportunities available for IC researchers:

Send a note to NIH Director Frances Collins
Urge him to dedicate more dollars to IC research, encourage him to maintain the momentum. NIH funding streams are ending and we do not yet have the answers. If you’d like to also share your comments with the ICA, please send them to icamail@ichelp.org.

DoD Peer Review Research Program

This program makes awards to support studies that make an important contribution to research and/or patient care in congressionally directed topic areas that are responsive to the health care needs of the Armed Forces, their family members, and/or the U.S. Veteran population. All applications must specifically and clearly address the military relevance of the proposed research. Collaboration with military researchers and clinicians is encouraged. Research projects may focus on any phase of research from basic laboratory research through translational research including preclinical studies in animal models and human subjects, as well as correlative studies associated with an existing clinical trial. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician’s first-hand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data.

DOD to Fund IC Research – Apply Now!

As a direct result of the Interstitial Cystitis Association’s (ICA’s) advocacy efforts, the Department of Defense (DOD) Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program (PRMRP) has included interstitial cystitis (IC) as one of the congressionally directed disease areas for fiscal year 2013. Recently, this program has funded:

  • Sonia Planey, PhD, Commonwealth Medical College, Philadelphia, PA, $750,000 to potentially develop a definitive diagnostic test for IC (fiscal year 2012).

  • Michael Chancellor, MD, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Royal Oak, MI, $1.6 million to potentially develop a new bladder drug delivery system for anti-nerve growth factor (NGF) IC therapy (fiscal year 2011).

IC researchers – we encourage you and your colleagues to apply for this funding! Fiscal year 2013 PRMRP mechanisms for the Clinical Trial Award, Investigator-Initiated Research Award, and Technology/Therapeutic Development Award have been released. The pre-application deadline for each award is June 24th, 2013; final applications are due October 8th, 2013. Information on the PRMRP Discovery Award mechanism will be released at a later date.

For more information on this funding opportunity, go to the DOD’s Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program website.

Please let us know if you decide to apply. Also, check out new NIH funding opportunities available to IC researchers.

ICA Pilot Research Program

Often researchers with novel IC research proposals are unable to receive funding from the NIH because they lack the preliminary data needed for NIH grant approval. The ICA Pilot Research Program provides researchers with the initial funding to get their projects literally "off the ground." The ICA Pilot Research Program, funded largely by ICA patient contributions, has "opened the door" for many researchers and enabled them to obtain large government grants to further pursue their explorations into the causes and treatments of IC.
