Interstitial cystitis (in-ter-
stish-
uhl sĭ-stī'tĭs), or as we call it, IC, is a condition that consists of recurring pelvic pain, pressure, or discomfort in the bladder and pelvic region, often associated with urinary frequency (needing to go often) and urgency (feeling a strong need to go).
IC may also be referred to as painful bladder syndrome (PBS).
IC can affect anyone. More than 4 million people in the US have IC. Between three and 8 million women and approximately 1.5 million men in the US may have IC. That is about 3 to 6% of all women in the US. For men the number is likely lower than the true rate because IC may often be mistaken for another disorder, such as chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome. Children are also diagnosed with IC, but prevalence data is not known.
The Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA) is the only non-profit health association solely dedicated to improving the quality of healthcare and lives of people living with IC. The ICA provides advocacy, research funding, and education to ensure early diagnosis and optimal care with dignity for people affected by IC. Together, we will achieve our mission of Conquering IC and Changing Lives!
