Shorter led numerous studies that examine the impact of the consumption of certain foods and beverages on interstitial cystitis (IC).  She is the lead author of "Effect of Comestibles on Symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis," published in the Journal of Urology in 2007.

Shorter received her Ed.D. in Nutrition Education from Teacher's College at Columbia University.  She is a registered dietitian, a certified dietitian-nutritionist, and a member of the American Dietetic Association.

"Dr. Shorter brings in-depth knowledge about diet and its impact on IC as a clinical dietitian and researcher.  Appointing her to the ICA Medical Advisory Board broadens our expertise about managing IC and recognizes that optimal management of IC calls for a multidisciplinary team approach," said Barbara Gordon, executive director of the ICA.  "We could not be more pleased to welcome her as a member of the leadership team."

"I am delighted to accept the invitation to be a member of the ICA Medical Advisory Board.  I hope that my research, experience and knowledge will help to improve the lives of those suffering with IC," said Shorter.  "I am pleased to offer my input on strategic priorities for ICA and to help the organization deliver health information that is accurate and current."

As a member of the Medical Advisory Board, Shorter will support ICA efforts to ensure early diagnosis and optimal care with dignity for people affected by interstitial cystitis, a severely painful and chronic bladder condition affecting as many as 8 million women and 1.5 million men in the United States.
