AMA Offers CME Courses on Health Literacy and Patient Safety

In their ongoing efforts to increase health literacy and patient safety, the American Medical Association (AMA) recently re-approved two of its popular educational resources: the Health Literacy Kit and the Patient Safety Monograph. Continuing medical education (CME) credit for physicians is available through these two self-study educational resources until May 2012.

The Health Literacy Kit includes an instructional video on DVD and CD-ROM, an in-depth manual for clinicians (PDF), and additional resources for education and involvement.

The Patient Safety Monograph entitled "Reducing the Risk by Designing a Safer, Shame-free Health Care Environment" includes the latest research findings on the connection between health literacy and patient safety and describes how ineffective communication and low health literacy combine to affect patient safety. The Monograph also provides tools to decrease communication-related adverse events at a system-wide level, and helps physicians initiate changes toward a safer and shame-free practice environment.

Electronic versions of both resources be downloaded at no charge at www.amafoundation.org/go/healthliteracy. Check out the instructions for claiming CME credits for these two resources.
