1995 ICA Milestones

>>In January the NIDDK sponsors a three-day research meeting on IC in Bethesda, Maryland.
The NIDDK provides funding for twelve IC-related research projects for 1994 - 95.

>>Bioniche Inc., a Canadian pharmaceutical company, announces the development and marketing in Canada of Cystistat, a promising new IC treatment. Further extensive clinical trials begin.

>>ICA Spokesperson Terry-Jo Myers, an LPGA golfer and IC patient, testifies before Congress. Myers, along with ICA Executive Director Debra Slade, and ICA Board Member Marianne Schuster, visit members of Congress and their aides to encourage continued funding of IC research.

>>Over 500 IC patients and researchers attend the ICA's Eighth National Meeting, October 6-8th, held in San Diego, CA. Prior to this meeting, the NIDDK and the ICA co-sponsor a research symposium.

>>ICA funds its second IC Research Scholarship to encourage urologists to establish careers in research. Dr. Denise Nigro, now completing the fellowship program at the University of Pennsylvania, is the recipient.

>>The first national "Bladder Health Week" is held September 10-16th to increase awareness of urologic diseases and to promote research.

>>The ICA sets up information booths at the American Urogynecological Society (AUGS) meeting held in Seattle, WA, the Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Pain Society (APS), and the American Urological Association (AUA) meeting, held in Las Vegas, NV. Attendees at the APS meeting include distinguished panel members Daniel Brookoff, M.D.; Daniel Carr, M.D.; Granuum Sant, M.D.; and Vicki Ratner, M.D., ICA President.

>>The August issue of Good Housekeeping and the May edition of Harvard Women's Health Watch feature comprehensive articles on IC and the ICA. ICA National Headquarters receives numerous inquiries as a result of these articles.

>>Two medical and educational videos focusing on IC are produced. A medical video for urologists and allied health care professionals explains IC and appropriate diagnostic and treatment options. It features Dr. Philip Hanno, Chairman of the Department of Urology at Temple University. Also, an educational self-care video for IC patients is produced. It features Dr. Kristene E. Whitmore, Director of the Division of Urology at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia.
